The
Bar Exam: Ego Trippin
Artist: Snoop Dogg
Album Title: Ego Trippin
Album #: 9
Label: Geffen/ Interscope
By L.D.Williams Jr
Snoop Dogg needs very little introduction to the
world in general. If he is not making a splash on
daytime television he is a star of his own reality
show Snoop Dogg's Fatherhood.
Snoop
Dogg is America's favorite crip and while he dabbles
in every form of media available to commercials to
television the hip hop world initially loved him for
making music. Snoop Dogg returns to appease the fans
of his music with his ninth solo disc Ego Trippin.
The album starts off strong when Snoop and Krupt
deliver an updated West Coast sound over DJ Quik's
horns. The next four songs are all solid with very
little to complain about. “Neva Have to Worry” is
the high point in the first five songs. The song is
biographical and Snoop manages to give the song an
aura of intensity and his trademark charisma.
“Life Of Da Party” features Too Short and Mistah
F.A.B. and it is produced by Scoop Deville. This
song definitely has the sound of a single. As the
album goes on there are really no songs that are
scratch your eyes out horrible. We have all heard
Sexual Eruption by now so we know that Snoop Dogg is
not shy abut using the vocoder to aid his singing
exploits trust me it is not the last time that he
does it. He may use the vocoder but he doesn't
overuse it. "My Medicine” sees Snoop tries to expand
his horizons and make a country themed song. “ Ridin
In My Chevy” has an obvious southern influence.
Like I said before, there is no song that is
particularly bad here. Snoop obviously named this
album Ego Trippin because he thinks that he can make
anything he wants. He even feels that he can
approach the album any way he wants because he
openly admitted that he enlisted Shawty Red to write
the hit that is spinning on the radio right now
“Sexual Eruption”. If Snoop feels that he can take
any approach and make anything he wants at this
career then he is right.
With Ego Trippin' Snoop manages to reach out and
cater to his diverse standpoint and he does a very
good job. In a music world that rotates on the axis
of downloads this is an album that you can spend
your money on and you will definitely wont be
disappointed. It doesn't matter if it is the country
infused “My Medicine”, southern infused “Ridin In
the Chevy”, or “Waste of Time” which features Raphel
Saadiq there is something there for you.
