From the moment I
heard the song I knew it was a hit worthy of the airplay it received.
I'm talking about "The Pocket". And if you're from the DC area,
there's something you need to do tonight. Thank the rap gods for sending
you Tabi Bonney. He's a real MC. He's an educated, humble, just
plain down-to-earth dude...someone that will represent DC Hip Hop to the
fullest. His style and flow is unique, and from the beginning he's
told us that the secret to his success was to just be himself. I
doubt that you will ever hear this man rapping about something he's
never experienced or something that you couldn't relate to personally.
I've seen him perform his music in front of kids and adults young at
heart. He didn't have to switch up his lyrics or sensor himself so
as not to offend the audience to get his message across. That's a
sign of good music...from a real MC. So support your boy...he's
doing it for real. I'm sure once it's all said and done, all of DC
will hold him in the highest regard just like they love and respect DJ
Kool, Non-Chalant and a few others that represented us and our DC sound
to the world.
DCMM: What’s good
with you Tabi
Tabi: Chillin’, man
ya’ll need to make me a co host as much as I’m on here...lol
DCMM: lol…True I feel
you, so what up with the label situation what’s going on with you.
Tabi: We talking to
all the labels, even a couple of stars you might know, but don’t want to
mention any names too soon, and I’m in the middle of shooting my next
video Syce it, so you’ll see it soon on MTV, MTV Jams, VH1 Soul and a
couple of others.
DCMM: Yes Syce It is
the jam right now. So how do you feel the public is receiving the new
project?
Tabi: Everything is
good; its a little apprehension when you come up with something
new...it’s not easy. But all the greats went through it, people
sometimes don’t understand it but they will eventually. So far it’s
been nothing but love.
DCMM: What’s on the
horizon for Tabi Bonney?
Tabi: Just taking it
to the next level, focusing on the music. Doing it internationally…I’m
in Europe and Africa. And soon to be in Japan
DCMM: The whole “In
the Pocket” Phenomena…how did that come about.
Tabi: It just
happened from hard work putting it out myself not looking for any hand
outs. Not asking any major labels to sign me. I put the project
together, invested my own money and it magically happened.
DCMM: Definitely,
because everyone is feeling that joint for real. Tell us about the
Organized Rhyme label.
Tabi: Organized
Rhyme, I founded with my partner Haziq, and we’ve just been pushing.
DCMM: Tabi before we
end this interview, what type of advice for the upcoming artist in the
business.
Tabi: Like I said,
don’t look for any hand outs, invest your money in your project and do
it because no one is going to believe in you except you and that’s what
you have to do.
DCMM: Definitely
words to live by…Tabi we thank you for supporting what we do and talking
with us. Much continued success to you.
