Lil Mo Interview

Lil’ Mo is back. The Godmother of Hip Hop and RnB.

We got a chance to catch up with the “Superwoman” and ask about her new label situation and current project.

DCMM: You got a single you promoting, tell us about that.

Lil’ Mo: My single and my new album are coming August 28th of this year on my own label.
The single is Sumtimes ft Jim Jones and part two on the album is ft. Fabolous.
My new album is entitled Pain and Paper on my own label Honey Child Inc. distributed through Koch. So we’re the Major Indie, meaning I’ve been on Major label my entire career and now I’m doing my own thing. I’m getting my Jay Z, 50 Cent and Puffy on... so we making moves and setting standards, it’s Da Godmother you heard…!

DCMM: That what’s up’ I love the Godmother moniker. How did you come up with that?

Lil’ Mo: Well actually my friends call me Godmother…I have children of my own…I’m real motherly…and I always felt the godmother takes over when your real mother is not around so I don’t mind being a role model, iconic in the hood for all the young ladies or even the older people who look up to me who need some advice. So I’ll take on that role of being there for my sisters and my brothers when ever you need me. I’m the godmother, the GM, General Manager, getting money, however you want to call it… that’s me.

DCMM: You have your own label situation with Koch, how did that come about?

Lil’ Mo: Well Honey Child Inc is under Drake Webb. Me and my business partner. We just came together, I was just tired of dealing with the major situations…I do love major labels because they have the marketing and promotion dollars, but at the same time it didn’t feel like they had my vision. I consider myself a real singer; I grew up in the church, I think I sing pure soul. A lot of people try to take that away from you. I felt like the best way to keep the vision was to get a team around me that wanted to see everything work and help my vision come to fruition. What better way to do it than by myself…so I have no one to blame…but I will not lose and I won’t fail. I can only rise to the top. A lot of women are scared to jump out there and start their own label. It’s not just me by myself, I have other artists; Phillip Bryant whose gospel album is coming October 4th. Jules in Judah Camp also gospel coming out Sept 11th…so I have a lot of big things poppin’ and Lil’Mo ain’t stoppin’.

DCMM: No doubt about that: One more question: what type of advice do you have for the young women in the industry;
Lil' Mo: Keep your head up. This is a male dominating industry… so stay focused. A lot of things will try to get you down and push you to the left. So don’t stop and don’t worry about the haters.

DCMM: I want to thank you Lil’ Mo for talking with us.
Make sure you look out for the single Sumthing ft Jim Jones and the remix ft Fabolous. And make sure you pick up Pain and Paper, also check out Lil’ Mo on her site: www.myspace.com/godmotherlilmo2
