If
you keep up with the underground hip-hop arena in the DMV, you'd know
that RELENTLEZZ Dre has been on his grind for a minute now.
DCMM: First
question...Tell me what your perspective is on the the DC Hip Hop scene
right now:
RELENTLEZZ DRE: i
think its peeking thru meaning we peeking into mainstream but just
waiting on the right sign till we just bust thru the window to the other
side!
DCMM: I know that you
been doing a lot to promote your music. You were one of the first artist I
saw that had a good web site, and was actively promoting yourself
outside of the city. Has your grind changed any or are there new
avenues you are following to promote?
RELENTLEZZ DRE: yea
you know i used the internet and a lot of street promoting but this time
around I'm gonna take the more professional route as well. i really want to
market myself for my upcoming project "Believe Me Now".
DCMM: For those who
don't know....what's RELENTLEZZ' style or how would you describe your
music:
RELENTLEZZ DRE: oh
man its like a gumbo! I think that's why i get a lot of fans even being
underground! i can come at ya with some speed rap or be on the laid back
tip. its like when you open or buy a RELENTLEZZ mixtape or album you
know its gonna be good but you don't know what kinda style you gonna get
DCMM: Let me back up
a minute....your last project (King of Maryland) raised some
controversy....but you definitely hit us with a slick flow. How was the
response from fans.....and other rappers...:
RELENTLEZZ DRE: well
the fans loved it. you know you get some haters or whatever but a lot of
Maryland rappers looked at it as well nobody claimed it yet so do ya
thing! I kinda chilled on that tip. i did that track for a reason and it
worked (lol)
DCMM: No doubt...I
hear you did some projects with the Bone Thugs, is
that true or was that a remix?
RELENTLEZZ DRE: well
it was a remix but you know I'm cool with them so they know about it and
heard it. they liked it. don't be surprised to hear them on my new album
on a official track!
DCMM: What should we
expect from the "Believe me Now" project
RELENTLEZZ DRE: well
on this album I wanna chill on the N word just to show I don't have to
use it as a filler word. but i might say it a few times but not a lot.
this album I wanna be more... how can i put this more into my music.
like the last album could of been wayyyyyyy better but i was busy doing
a lot of other things. right now im half way into this project and i got
track with people from the UK just all over. its going to be one of the
best albums to come out early 08. its going to show more of my inner
thoughts so people who know me i know saying oh boy he might have a heavy
metal track on there somewhere (lol)
DCMM: It's sounds
like you're growing as an artist and I cant be mad at that...but tell me
is this one for the streets?
RELENTLEZZ DRE: I cant really say that's what i have to ask the fans how they feel about
the album. I try to make my music reach everybody.
DCMM: The collaborations on
this project, can you give some info on that as far as any DC based
talent and what's the banger...the one you feel like we should really
listen out for:
RELENTLEZZ DRE: oh
yeah I got my homie Don Cox from Fire Drop Ent. produced a few tracks. I
got a homie part of my Rel Squad he produced a few beats. I'm quite sure
De'Aticus going to produce a few tracks and you know i got to go to my
homie Draucs for some tracks. well as for DC based talent i have
De'Aticus, my homie Bubb thats on a come up. that's it as far as Dc
talent. The banger I released early called "Back At It" its on my
myspace page. Oh by the way i am also working on a mixtape "Yeah
I'm RELENTLEZZ" Vol.2.
DCMM:
You been on your grind for a minute and I know you have some advice for
others trying to come up...(Also tell me about your
influences...people you respect in the industry)
RELENTLEZZ DRE: well
for the artists on a come up!!!! its not going to happen over night. you
might be nice or claim you the best but if only a few homies in your
hood only heard of you. You have to step your game up cause the game is
bigger than just dropping 16 bars or dropping tracks. You really have to
get out there and promote yourself and be humble at the same time.
My influences in the game I respect are all of the artists who didn't change
there style just to keep with the bullsh*t they play on the radio or
might I say that you (yall) request on the radio (lol)
Oh and about my
mixtape "Yeah I'm RELENTLEZZ" Vol.2. I'm tryin' to get everybody from the
DMV on it!
DCMM: You got an open
invite to rappers in the DMV or are you handpicking who you want on it?
RELENTLEZZ DRE: yea
anybody who making moves all the big names that's in the DMV. big move
makers should make big moves together.
DCMM: no
doubt...that's what we need to see happen
RELENTLEZZ DRE: i
just did a show with Tabi Bonney: shit I'll even do a track with him...I
don't care! Tabi is doing it big!!! way big. Our styles are way
diff to clear that up.
DCMM: I think people
are starting to appreciate Tabi and Wale... getting on the tracks
with them can help everyone in the DMV.
RELENTLEZZ DRE: You're
right!
DCMM: RELENTLEZZ,
thanks for talking with us...much success in your career. We want
to remind folks in the DMV to support all of our local and independent
artists.
